A tractor-operated chaff cutter is a mechanized farm implement designed to process fodder—such as straw, hay, maize stalks, and green or dry grasses—into fine, uniform pieces that are easier for livestock to digest. It attaches to a tractor’s Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft to power the cutting mechanism efficiently.
Main Components & MechanismPower Input via Tractor PTO
The implement draws rotational energy from the tractor’s PTO shaft, which drives the cutting flywheel or rollers.
Feeding System
Most models include multiple feed rollers—usually 3 or 4—with a conveyor belt system to automatically draw fodder into the cutting mechanism.
Cutting Mechanism
A heavy flywheel fitted with several sharp blades (commonly 2 to 4, adjustable) acts as the cutter. As the flywheel spins, these blades shear the fodder uniformly.
Gearbox and Reversibility
Many units include forward and reverse gearing—often via a gearbox or bevel pinion gear—allowing blockage removal and operational safety.
Discharge and Accessories
Chaff is expelled via a blower or upward chute—some models include blowers or straw walkers for grain separation and improved cleanliness.
Mobility & Frame
These units often include robust frames with pneumatic wheels or towable chassis for easy transport across the field.
Fodder Cutting Capacity: Typically ranges between 3,500 to over 6,000 kg/hour depending on model and crop type.
Tractor Power Requirement: Most units require tractors in the 35–50 HP range, with some heavy-duty versions needing up to 100 HP+/larger capacities.
PTO Speed: Standard PTO speed is around 550 RPM.
Structure & Weight: These machines often weigh between 850 to 1,400 kg and are built with heavy-duty frames.
High Efficiency
Capable of processing large volumes of fodder quickly and uniformly—often 25% more efficient than manual or motor-operated variants.
Labor & Time Saving
Automating the cutting process significantly reduces manual efforts and expedites fodder preparation.
Better Animal Digestion & Productivity
Uniformly cut fodder aids digestion and improves feed intake, often translating into higher milk yield or animal performance.
Durability & Safety
Made with cast iron, carbon steel, or mild steel; many machines include safety guards around rotating parts and robust gearboxes.
Versatility across Crops
Can process a range of materials—paddy straw, maize, millet, sorghum, grass—whether dry or green.
